Why Fiction Is a Challenge
Fiction writers have a harder task, since what they write has to be believable, unlike nonfiction and the things that actually happen. Like this. You couldn't make this stuff up and get away with it. (Story unlocked so you don't have to worry about the paywall. You're welcome.)
I can’t imagine what it would be like to walk through your wide open property minding your own business, only to have something like the experience detailed in the news story unfold. A part of me wished for actual photos, while another part felt grateful none appeared in any source I’ve checked. (If you find one, please don’t show it to me.)
It was one of the challenging things about writing Way of the Three-Year-Old Why as a business fable/parable. The genre combines aspects of fiction and nonfiction. It uses a story to teach principles, so to be successful, it has to have a good story at its heart. While 3yo is inspired by real-world events, it’s not autobiographical. It has an obvious bit of the fantastical, but the basic story circumstances had to be believable, and our actual life circumstances have tended toward friends (who know the facts) shaking their heads and muttering, “Unbelievable.”
